Were torn between hiring someone and doing it ourselves. My husband says its really hard to do it well I think we can just be careful. Is it as hard to make it look professional as he thinks?

It is hard to make it look perfect. If you arent experienced you will end up doing a LOT of sanding. If you have to do a ceiling dont do it yourself. That is really a pain. If you do it yourself be sure you have all the right tools and watch some howtos. Good luck.

Hello

This depends on what you are trying to mud and tape. A ceiling which will be light colored with a lot of open light yes it can be difficult to make it look professional. It still can look professional if you guys do it your self and will save a lot of money. I will be honest it will take a lot of patients and time.
If you are simply repairing a hole you can easily do that your self and make it look professional.
The thing to remember is mudding and tapping only looks as good as what you put into it. If you take the time and apply the coats correctly and sand it smoothly it will turn out very nice.
Hopefully you found this helpful.

I have included in the sources a website that will explain the entire drywall process including mudding and taping. The site also offers a cost estimator and a material estimator.

Take some good advice. Do not try this yourself.
It sounds easy you can read about how to do it you can watch a video about how to do it you can watch someone else do it.
But do not try this yourself.
You will think it looks good until you go to prime and paint it then you will learn fast that it isnt that easy but then its too late.
To finish drywall you have to learn how its done by doing it several times while being taught by a pro. Every little dipbumpand uneven place is magnified 100 times when you go to prime the surface.
Some things are better left to the pros This is by far one of those.

i depends on how many times you are willing to redo the work. If you are willing to have a try or ten you can do it yourself and still save some cash. you can fix any imperfections after the prime coat and when you are satisfied you can paint.

after some practice and ensuring you have the right tools its not hard. the only thing is it is a messy time consuming job and if your a perfectionist its tough.

as with many jobs not having the right tools and not educating yourself a bit beforehand ensures disasterous results.

read up a bit on how to do it go buy some tools and give it a shot. you have to do many coats on the joints flaring it out a little more each time so you dont have big humps in the wall. between each coat sand it down or before it dries completely hard scrape off a little extra. then do another coat and continue to flare it out wider each time. then give it a good final sand.

one thing i have noticed is that in different light you notice different things in not so bright light it might look perfect but shine a light on it and you notice problems id often have homeowners leave sticky notes or circle problems on the wal that we didnt even notice but they noticed during the change in light. its a long messy job but its kind of fun

Of course you can do it yourself…if you have the right tools it will be easy.I am doing my house right now its easy once you get the hang of it.

Your going to need these tools

sheet rock knifes

coner tool

When muding cracks where drywall meet put some mud on it then put the tape along the crack then put more mud on it and smooth it out with that wide knife. once it dries put another coat of mud then one more and sand smooth. most ends of dry wall are tapered if you are doing one where its a non tapered to a straight cut edge take a utility knive and shave off allong the edge to make a slant.

On coners do the same except use that fancy coner tool to smoot out the mud make sure you dont get a build up of mud at the bottom and top cuase it will dry hard.

On coners that poke out you have to put a metal strip along the edge like in this picture:

Put mudd on then put on the strip then more mud and repeat 3 times. You dont have to nail it it but you can if you want.

Remember that when you are mudding make sure your nail/screws heads are sunk into the drywall so that there is an indentaion. Once its all dry take some Drywall Sandpaper and sand it all smooth.

email me if you have anymore questions i am happy to help
