Science Diet VS The Goodlife Recipe?

Question by Miller_Fan_2: Science Diet VS The Goodlife Recipe?
I was about to order some cat food online. I normally get my cats Science Diet. They seem to like it but my wallet does not. I found a coupon for The Goodlife Recipe and the reviews seem to be great, the price is also right.
Do you have an opinion between these two brands?

Well, I’m a SD fan and haven’t heard of the other, so… The reason why I’m responding is because my cats refuse to eat any other food. Be careful spending your $ on something new if your cats are picky eaters. Maybe go on the GR website and see if they’ll mail you a free sample.
What do you think? Answer below!

When you work it out it doesn’t cost that much to feed science diet, even on the little bags its about 85cents a day and the bigger the bag you buy the cheaper it gets and the longer it will last. I’ve used science diet for my cats for four years and would never go back. They have shiny coats, look really healthy and their litter tray is never smelly. I would rather trust a company whose been making a premium quality petfood for over 70 years and gives a 100% money back guarantee than a company I’ve never heard of or seen in the shops. If you go to places like petbarn, they often have specials on hills science diet and they have a program where every 10 bags you buy of hills you get one free, you get a card and just swipe every time you shop. And you also get points towards a voucher. Another petshop called petstock had 20% off all hills for its birthday special the other week. It costs me less to feed this food than when i fed my cats whiskas!! Be careful not to overfeed to. Most adult cats only need 1/2 to 3/4 cup per day each. My cats are part of the family, one of them is 16 years old (and diabetic) and the vet can’t believe how good he looks.
It costs less than 2 cups of coffee a week to feed them. I know which i’d rather give up. Hope this is helpful.

Neither one is very good – Science Diet is highly-advertised, over priced. The Goodlife is at least priced appropriately. Read the ingredients on both of those, and keep in mind that Nature intended for cats to eat meat, not grains. Both foods are mostly cheap fillers. Cats have no need for corn in their diets, and it’s the source of many tummy upsets and allergies. Another cheap filler is by-products. This is not meat, it’s scrap “parts” that have been deemed unfit for human consumption. It’s tasty things such as beaks, hides, tendons, intestines, spinal chords, spleens – no real meat there.
Science Diet doesn’t even contain any meat – the first four ingredients are Brewers rice, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, corn meal. No meat, just grain and by-products. The Goodlife isn’t really any better: GROUND CORN, CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL, CORN GLUTEN MEAL, ANIMAL FAT, CHICKEN, WHOLE GRAIN BROWN RICE. The only real meat in this one is down below the animal fat.
For what you are spending on fillers, you could get a food that’s a much higher quality that contains real meat for your cat and no junk fillers. Two foods that are actually less than Science Diet and high quality are Nutro and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul.
Answer #4
Without even looking, I can tell you that SD is overpriced crap.
The Goodlife chicken ingredients:
INGREDIENTS:
GROUND CORN (bad), CHICKEN-BY-PRODUCT MEAL (bad), CORN GLUTEN MEAL (bad), ANIMAL FAT, CHICKEN, WHOLE GRAIN BROWN RICE (not good), NATURAL POULTRY FLAVOR (wtf is this?), DRIED PEAS, DRIED BEET PULP, WHEAT FLOUR (not good), RICE (bad), BREWERS DRIED YEAST, SALT, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, WHEAT GLUTEN (bad), CHOLINE CHLORIDE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, CALCIUM CARBONATE, DRIED SPINACH, DRIED TOMATOES, DRIED CARROTS, SKIM MILK POWDER, DICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, TAURINE, dl-METHIONINE, MINERALS (ZINC SULFATE, COPPER SULFATE, MANGANESE SULFATE, POTASSIUM IODIDE), IRON OXIDE, VITAMINS (dl-ALPHA TOCOPHEROL ACETATE [SOURCE OF VITAMIN E], FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN A ACETATE, L-ASCORBYL-2-POLYPHOSPHATE [SOURCE OF VITAMIN C], VITAMIN B12 SUPPLEMENT, NIACIN, RIBOFLAVIN SUPPLEMENT [VITAMIN B2], d-CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, THIAMINE MONONITRATE [VITAMIN B1], VITAMIN D3 SUPPLEMENT, BIOTIN, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE [VITAMIN B6] ), VEGETABLE OIL (SOURCE OF LINOLEIC ACID), CHLOROPHYLL, NATURALLY PRESERVED WITH MIXED TOCOPHEROLS, MARIGOLD MEAL.
SD Adult original ingredients:
Chicken By-Product Meal (BAD), Ground Whole Grain Corn (BAD), Brewers Rice (BAD), Animal Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Corn Gluten Meal (BAD), Chicken Liver Flavor (WTF?), Potassium Chloride, Calcium Sulfate, Choline Chloride, Iodized Salt, Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (Source of Vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Biotin, Vitmain B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Taurine, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract (NOT GOOD).
Honestly, these both SUCK. It’s hard to say which is worse because they both contain really awful ingredients. In fairness since you didn’t say which SD you’re using, it’s possible that the ingredients might be slightly better than those I’ve listed. In fact, I just saw a new SD line that actually has meat! That’s almost impressive.
Nature’s Best ingredients:
Chicken, Cracked Pearled Barley, Corn Gluten Meal, Whole Grain Oats, Brown Rice, Dried Egg Product, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Chicken Meal, Soy Protein Isolate, Brewers Rice, Cranberries, Apples, Carrots, Peas, Soybean Oil, Chicken Liver Flavor, Potassium Chloride, DL-Methionine, Choline Chloride, Calcium Sulfate, Broccoli, Flaxseed, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Taurine, Oat Fiber, preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Vitamin E Supplement, L-Tryptophan, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.
If this is the one you were using, I’d say that it is better than the Goodlife, although still pretty crappy and overpriced (12-lb bag
$ 35.99).
My advice to you is to skip the SD but also skip the Goodlife. You can find much better food for a better or similar price.
My top picks are likely going to be even more expensive – Wellness Core, Nature’s Variety Instincts and Innova Evo. These are my top choices because they’re grainless.
But there are other dry foods which aren’t quite as good but are head and shoulders above the two you’ve listed. Natural Balance is one example – their green pea and duck is pretty decent. And it’s about 10 pounds for $ 20.
Here are some others: A new line that looks decent is Merrick’s B.G. (Before Grain). I agree with some of the foods listed here but not all. I am happy to review ingredient lists if requested: http://cats.about.com/cs/nutrition/tp/premdrycatfood.htm

I’m just wondering where JC got their information from? I’m doing my best to find a good high quality food for my kittens, who are currently eating science diet because that’s what the vet recommended. I read it wasn’t that great so I’ve been doing research, I heard a lot of good things about nutro so I looked up the ingredients and they are almost identical to Science Diet. In kitten food at least. The first 4 ingredients are Chicken Meal, Ground Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Poultry Fat. The adult food is even worse. The first 4 ingredients in Science Diet are Chicken By-Product Meal, Ground Whole Grain Corn, Animal Fat. Any answers? Chicken soup does seem to be a bit better, Chicken is actually the first ingredient, so why are you recommending Nutro when its no better?
Answer #6
Neither are good for the reasons listed by some of the responses below. Corn is a cheap source of plant protein and a common allergen. Both foods have very little animal protein. You`d be paying for cheap fillers that may cause allergies in your cat. Better options are canned foods without fillers.

I know for a fact that Science Diet is a very good cat food, but you might find out for yourself after trying the other, that their coats lose there sheen and they use their cat box, or go outdoors far more often.Science Diet is far more nourishing.
