what is the difference between url rewrite and redirect?

i want to redirect url using htaccess but i dont know which rule should be written to solve the issue.
page1: http://mydomain.com/userprofilename.php?user
page2: http://mydomain.com/user
i want to redirect page2 to page1 where page2 is not exist on server.
please help me asap.

Make certain all of this code is on the same line no matter how yahoo formats it. You may need to create a index.html page or some other standard page to actually redirect the user if the first doesnt work try the second.
